Where can I ask an astronomy question?

An astronomy Q&A room that expects prior search effort, clear writing, and redirects telescope shopping to dedicated megathreads.

Sky questions belong in an astronomy room when they are about the science or observing — not blurry phone zooms with no context. r/askastronomy asks you to search first, avoid dumping homework, and use existing shopping megathreads for gear purchases.

Where to ask

r/askastronomy

Best for: Astronomy questions about the sky, observing and related concepts after a basic search.

Why it fits: Its public description: “For your astronomy-related questions and content!”

Rules to know before posting:

  • Before posting, you should at the very **MINIMUM** put your topic of interest into a search engine. Do not post blurry images, or digitally zoomed images taken from a cheap camera.
  • We're not here to do your homework for you. If you are stuck on a SPECIFIC, ASTRONOMY-RELATED question, feel free to ask, but show what you've done/tried, and ask specific questions.
  • Treat others respectfully and act in a dignified manner.
  • Start here:
  • Some behavior is not appropriate for an all-ages astronomy subreddit. We welcome questions and answers from anyone.
  • For purposes of making the subreddit educational and indexable, please use correct grammar, don't use slang and vernacular, and write for clarity.
  • Don't claim credentials without proof in your profile. Anything else is not trustworthy.

Before you post

  • Say what you already tried and where you are observing from when the answer depends on location or timing.
  • Purchase advice should start from the linked astronomy shopping megathreads rather than a vague “what telescope?” title.
  • Homework needs a specific stuck point and your work so far — not “do this assignment.”
