Where can I ask people to help name my pet?

Species-specific naming rooms for cats and dogs that require your own photos and stay focused on name suggestions.

Pet-naming communities want original photos of an animal you own and comments that suggest names — not breed debates or off-topic advice. Pick the room that matches the species.

Where to ask

r/namemycat

Best for: Naming a cat you own that does not yet have a name.

Why it fits: Its public description: “The official sub to name cats! Read ALL rules to their fullest extent before posting or commenting.”

Rules to know before posting:

  • You must own the cat; no strays, neighbor cats or animals about to change owners.
  • Only real cats — nothing else.
  • The cat must not already have a name if you are asking for a first name.
  • Include a photo (preferably more than one); no internet-stolen or AI-generated images.
  • Comments should be about naming only — no advice or criticism threads.
  • No anatomical, vulgar, dictator/political or crime-themed name suggestions.

r/NameMyDog

Best for: Naming a dog you own, with photo context and the kind of name you want.

Why it fits: Its public description welcomes posts of a dog that needs a name — with photos and the type of name you are looking for — and asks that suggestions stay helpful and friendly.

Rules to know before posting:

  • Flair your post (required).
  • Photos must be of your dog (original content); found-online photos are treated as spam.
  • Post at least two photos of the dog.
  • No crossposts and no karma-farming or business-driving posts.
  • Stay friendly; vulgar or unfriendly name suggestions are removed.

Before you post

  • Say whether you want human names, nature names, short call-names or bilingual options.
  • Use the cat room for cats and the dog room for dogs — mixed “name any pet” communities are much smaller.
  • For health questions about a pet, use the pet-health communities instead of naming rooms.
