Where can I ask a pet health question?

A veterinary Q&A community with posting requirements, plus a dog-behavior room that warns veterinary replies are unverified.

Online pet-health threads cannot replace a vet who can examine your animal. Use them for orientation only, and go to a clinic or emergency vet when symptoms are severe or getting worse.

Where to ask

r/AskVet

Best for: A veterinary-medicine question answered by veterinary professionals in public.

Why it fits: Its public description: “A place where you can ask veterinary medicine related questions and get advice from veterinary professionals.”

Rules to know before posting:

  • Include signalment (species, age, sex/neuter status, breed, weight), history, clinical signs, how long they have lasted, and links to reports or photos when you have them.
  • Check the FAQ before posting.
  • No specific treatment instructions or medication dosages from commenters without a vet–client relationship.
  • No anecdotes as answers, no random diagnosis guessing, and no commentary on another vet’s pricing or treatment choices.

r/DogAdvice

Best for: Dog behavior and husbandry questions; medical replies there are explicitly unverified.

Why it fits: Its public description: “A subreddit for requesting advice on Dog behavior and husbandry. Any veterinary advice given is being given by individuals of unknown education and should be considered suspect.”

Rules to know before posting:

  • No dominance theory or aversive methods.
  • Be polite and on-topic; no self-promotion.
  • No requests for financial assistance.
  • Do not solicit private messages — keep advice in the thread.

Before you post

  • If your pet is in distress, contact a vet or emergency clinic — do not wait for Reddit.
  • Species, age, weight and a timeline of symptoms matter more than a vague “my pet is sick.”
  • This page only points to communities; it does not diagnose or prescribe.
