Where can I ask what PC parts to buy?

PC-building communities for custom desktop advice — buildapc for discussion with limits on full spoon-fed lists, and buildapcforme when you need a complete parts list from a template.

“What parts should I buy for this budget?” is a different question from “my PC won’t boot.” r/buildapc is the large custom-desktop advice community, but full spoon-fed parts lists are steered to r/buildapcforme or Discord. Broken-PC troubleshooting still belongs on the computer-problem page.

Where to ask

r/buildapc

Best for: Custom desktop build discussion and single-part questions — not full spoon-fed lists or laptop shopping.

Why it fits: Its public description: “Planning on building a computer but need some advice? This is the place to ask! /r/buildapc is a community-driven subreddit dedicated to custom PC assembly.”

Members in our directory: 8.5M

Rules to know before posting:

  • Be respectful.
  • No full build-spoonfeeding requests — complete parts lists go to r/buildapcforme or the Discord; single-part questions are fine.
  • No piracy or grey-market software keys.
  • No laptop or prebuilt shopping questions — use laptop suggestion communities instead.
  • No hardware-news dumps, sales posts, retailer-RMA vents, all-caps/clickbait titles, low-effort memes as submissions, self-promo, selling/trading, or more than one submission per 24 hours.
  • No intentionally harmful or joke advice; no bots; ban appeals go through modmail only.

r/buildapcforme

Best for: Requesting a full parts list that matches a filled-out needs template.

Why it fits: Its public description: “A subreddit dedicated to helping those looking to assemble their own PC without having to spend weeks researching and trying to find the right parts.”

Rules to know before posting:

  • Request posts must complete the automod template questions.
  • No joke/troll or unlimited-budget fantasy requests — ask for a build you intend to purchase.
  • Contributors should follow the requester’s template answers closely.
  • Keep discussions civil.
  • No piracy or grey-market key talk.
  • No advertising or charging money for help.

Before you post

  • State budget, country, resolution/refresh target and whether the PC is for gaming, video or general use.
  • Laptops belong on laptop-suggestion communities; boot failures belong on the computer-problem page.
  • Complete “build this for me” lists need the buildapcforme template — not a vague budget-only title on buildapc.
