Where can I identify a stamp?

A philately discussion community for collectors identifying stamps and postal history — not a free appraisal service for inherited lots.

r/philately is for stamp collectors discussing stamps and postal history. Pure “what is this pile worth?” requests from non-collectors are against the rules.

Where to ask

r/philately

Best for: Identifying stamps and discussing postal history with other collectors.

Why it fits: Its public description: “A place to discuss stamps and postal history with fellow collectors.”

Rules to know before posting:

  • No requests to value stamps or collections when you only care about price and do not intend to collect them.
  • No selling posts or sales links (except exceptional rare auctions).
  • No commercial self-promotion.
  • Do not flood the community with many posts per day — use albums for multiple images.
  • Keep discussion civil and in English.

Read r/philately’s current rules on Reddit

Before you post

  • Show the full stamp, any overprints and the reverse if watermarks or gum matter.
  • Say the country you think it is from, even if you are guessing — it narrows catalogs quickly.
  • Coin questions belong in the coin communities, not here.
