Where can I ask a genealogy or family-history question?

A genealogy research community for family-history questions — with a hard ban on posting living people’s personal information.

Family-history brick walls need research tips, record pointers and method discussion. r/Genealogy covers genealogy topics provided the thread is not about living people’s private details. Volunteer replies are research help, not a professional genealogist engagement.

Where to ask

r/Genealogy

Best for: Research questions about ancestors, records and genealogy methods — not doxxing living relatives.

Why it fits: Its public description: “A subreddit about all things genealogy... provided it's not about living people.”

Rules to know before posting:

  • Do not post living people’s personal information (except information they already published themselves).
  • Treat people with respect — no abuse, threats, harassment or hate slurs.
  • No heavy self-promotion; contribute to the community if you share your own site or work.
  • No affiliate links or URL shorteners.
  • Respond to people who help you.
  • Keep requests genealogy-related and check the FAQ before repeating common questions.

Before you post

  • Name the country, time period and record types you already searched — “find my family” with no details rarely goes far.
  • Strip living relatives’ private contact details, exact modern addresses and similar PII from screenshots.
  • DNA-testing vendor support questions may belong on that vendor’s own help channels when the issue is account access, not research method.
