Best Philosophy Subreddits (November 2026)

Most philosophy talk on Reddit happens in a few big places, but the smaller communities are where the specialists are. We checked the communities Reddit returns for “philosophy”, kept the public, safe-for-work ones with at least 25,000 members that are still posting, and ranked the 8 that remain by size. Together they have 19.4M members.

How the philosophy communities compare

Membership is concentrated: the three largest communities hold 99% of all members on this list, so most of the philosophy conversation happens in a handful of places. Size and activity don't line up perfectly: r/philosophy has the most members, but r/askphilosophy gets the most new posts (about 36 a day, against 7 in r/philosophy). Per member, the liveliest is r/PoliticalPhilosophy: 6.0 posts a day from 30.5K members — a smaller crowd, but an engaged one. The oldest is r/philosophy, founded in 2008, and every community here is more than five years old — this is a long-established corner of Reddit.

Choosing where to post

If you have a question, start in r/askphilosophy: it is set up for exactly that, and with about 36 new posts a day there are plenty of people around to answer. Competition for attention differs a lot: r/philosophy has 18.6M members but only about 7.0 new posts a day — roughly one new post for every 2.7M members — while r/askphilosophy gets about 36 a day, one for every 12.4K. A strong, well-made post therefore has more room to be seen in r/philosophy; r/askphilosophy is better when you want quick replies.

Big subreddits give a post the widest audience, but they also bury it quickly; the mid-sized communities on this list are usually friendlier for questions and first posts. Always read the rules in the sidebar first — each community is run by its own volunteer moderators. Our guide to searching Reddit explains how to dig through any of these communities, and the subreddit info tool gives you the stats of one we don't list.
