How the geography communities compare
Membership is concentrated: the three largest communities hold 84% of all members on this list, so most of the geography conversation happens in a handful of places. Size and activity don't line up perfectly: r/geography has the most members, but r/mapmaking gets the most new posts (about 13 a day). Per member, the liveliest is r/TravelMaps: 11 posts a day from 41.2K members — a smaller crowd, but an engaged one. The oldest is r/geography, founded in 2008, and every community here is more than five years old — this is a long-established corner of Reddit.

Choosing where to post
r/mapmaking moves fastest, with about 13 new posts a day, so posts there get replies quickly but also slide off the front page within hours. Jokes and memes have their own home in r/geographymemes; the serious communities tend to remove them, so keep the two apart.
Before posting, sort a subreddit by “Top” for the past month: it shows in a minute what that community rewards. Always read the rules in the sidebar first — each community is run by its own volunteer moderators. Our guide to searching Reddit explains how to dig through any of these communities, and the subreddit info tool gives you the stats of one we don't list.
