Board games vs tabletop RPGs

r/boardgames covers news, information and discussion about modern board games and their culture (its description names Codenames, Wingspan and Brass). r/rpg is for all things tabletop roleplaying.

Both have SubMouse pages (boardgames about 5.5M, rank #160; rpg about 1.6M, rank #660); rpg lists boardgames as related. Samples are text-led; boardgames is busier in our window (roughly 70 vs 30 posts per day).

Collected titles: boardgames requires high-quality, on-topic posts and participation before promotion. rpg bans piracy, video games, direct image/video links, looking-for-group posts and blacklisted creators. Discuss a board game in boardgames; discuss systems, campaigns and GMing in rpg—and look for groups elsewhere, since rpg bans LFG posts.

  • r/boardgames: modern board games; promotion requires participation (collected title).
  • r/rpg: tabletop RPGs; no LFG posts, no video games (collected titles).
  • Both have full SubMouse community pages.

Where this comparison comes from

Public descriptions, member counts and related links from SubMouse’s safe-for-work directory. Short rule titles and activity samples collected for both. Short titles only.

Members and public descriptions come from SubMouse's safe-for-work directory (as of 2026-11-02 UTC); 7-day growth measured from 2026-10-26. Posts/day and post-type mixes appear when we have an activity sample. Rule lines are short titles, not the full sidebar. Directory rank is listing order — communities outside the current Top 100 open in the info tool instead of a full community page.
