Best Mathematics Subreddits (November 2026)

Most mathematics talk on Reddit happens in a few big places, but the smaller communities are where the specialists are. We checked the communities Reddit returns for “math” and “mathematics”, kept the public, safe-for-work ones with at least 25,000 members that are still posting, and ranked the 9 that remain by size. Together they have 4.9M members.

How the mathematics communities compare

Membership is concentrated: the three largest communities hold 93% of all members on this list, so most of the mathematics conversation happens in a handful of places. Size and activity don't line up perfectly: r/math has the most members, but r/mathematics gets the most new posts (about 36 a day). Per member, the liveliest is r/matheducation: 8.3 posts a day from 32.5K members — a smaller crowd, but an engaged one. The oldest is r/math, founded in 2008, and every community here is more than five years old — this is a long-established corner of Reddit.

Choosing where to post

If you have a question, start in r/learnmath: it is set up for exactly that, and with about 29 new posts a day there are plenty of people around to answer. Competition for attention differs a lot: r/maths has 55.4K members but only about 4.1 new posts a day — roughly one new post for every 13.5K members — while r/mathematics gets about 36 a day, one for every 4.5K. A strong, well-made post therefore has more room to be seen in r/maths; r/mathematics is better when you want quick replies.

A simple rule of thumb: ask questions in the specialised communities and share your best finds in the big ones, where they can reach the most people. Always read the rules in the sidebar first — each community is run by its own volunteer moderators. Our guide to searching Reddit explains how to dig through any of these communities, and the subreddit info tool gives you the stats of one we don't list.
