Best Hockey Subreddits (November 2026)

Most hockey talk on Reddit happens in a few big places, but the smaller communities are where the specialists are. We checked the communities Reddit returns for “hockey” and “nhl”, kept the public, safe-for-work ones with at least 25,000 members that are still posting, and ranked the 11 that remain by size. Together they have 6.7M members.

How the hockey communities compare

Membership is concentrated: the three largest communities hold 90% of all members on this list, so most of the hockey conversation happens in a handful of places. Size and activity don't line up perfectly: r/hockey has the most members, but r/hockeycards gets the most new posts (about 34 a day). Per member, the liveliest is r/NHLcirclejerk: 32 posts a day from 28.3K members — a smaller crowd, but an engaged one. Among the communities we track weekly, r/hockey grew fastest recently (+0.07%, +2.3K members since Oct 26). The oldest is r/hockey, founded in 2008, and every community here is more than five years old — this is a long-established corner of Reddit.

Choosing where to post

Questions do best in r/hockeyplayers, the community on this list that is built around advice and help (around 21 posts a day). Jokes and memes have their own homes in r/hockeymemes and r/NHLcirclejerk; the serious communities tend to remove them, so keep the two apart. Rule sets vary: of the communities we have rules for, r/nhl lists 15, against 10 in r/hockey, so a post that is fine in one can be removed in another.

Big subreddits give a post the widest audience, but they also bury it quickly; the mid-sized communities on this list are usually friendlier for questions and first posts. Always read the rules in the sidebar first — each community is run by its own volunteer moderators. Our guide to searching Reddit explains how to dig through any of these communities, and the subreddit info tool gives you the stats of one we don't list.
