Report flags rule-breaking content, block cuts off an account, mute hides a community from feeds and notifications.

Which tool when
- Report — signal that a specific post or comment may break Reddit Rules or community rules.
- Block — cut off an account from contacting you / showing in your usual view, per Reddit’s block Help.
- Mute community — exclude that community from Home (including recommendations), Popular, and notifications, within Reddit’s documented limits.
These are different controls. Reporting does not replace blocking for personal distance. Blocking does not replace reporting when rules were broken. Muting a community does not sanction an individual account. Reddit Help asks you to report rule-breaking content even when you also mute or block.
If you are wondering why one of your own posts was removed or filtered, that is a different question from reporting someone else’s content. For a plain overview of what community moderators can and cannot do, see Reddit moderators explained.
Report a post or comment
Per Reddit Help (updated 2026-10-06): on reddit.com or the Reddit app, open the overflow menu on the post or comment, then select Report. The Android Help wording calls out the overflow control before Report.
Report the specific item. If you also want distance from the account, use Block as a separate step.
Reddit’s Help page notes reporting can be hard emotionally and links Crisis Text Line (in the U.S., text CHAT to 741741) plus other regional resources. That support path is Reddit’s, not SubMouse’s.
Block and unblock
Block from a profile
Web: profile → overflow on the profile card → Block Account. iOS/Android: profile → overflow → Block account. Old Reddit: profile sidebar under chat → Block user.
Block from settings
Web: Privacy settings → Block accounts under Social interactions → type username → add → save. Apps: Settings → your username → Manage blocked accounts under Safety → search → Block.
Unblock
Web: Privacy settings → Blocked accounts → X beside the username. Apps: Settings → username → Manage blocked accounts → Unblock.
Special cases when someone blocks a community moderator (or the reverse) are documented in a separate Reddit Help article. Ordinary personal blocks should not assume those exceptions.
Mute a community
Community muting excludes communities from notifications, Home (including recommendations), and Popular. Help documents a cap of up to 1,000 muted communities.
From a community page
Visit the community → overflow → Mute r/[name] (confirm on apps if prompted).
From feeds
Web Help documents Show fewer posts like this from a recommendation-style post overflow. In Popular on apps, post overflow can offer Mute r/[name]. Recommendation overflow can offer Show fewer posts like this, then a mute option.
From settings
Web: Preferences → Muted communities. Apps: Settings → Account settings → Safety → Manage muted communities.
Help interaction: opting back into notifications for a muted community removes it from the muted list and can restore it in recommendations and feeds.
Hypothetical scenarios
Illustrations only — not claimed user quotes or firsthand tests.
- One harassing comment → Report the comment; consider Block on the account.
- A community clutters Home but is not rule-breaking → Mute; you can still visit it directly.
- You still like a community but hate one recommendation → Prefer Show fewer / leave, not a permanent mute, if you want it later.
- You muted a community then re-enabled its notifications → Expect unmute behavior; check Manage muted communities.
Decision checklist
- Specific post/comment may break rules → Report that item.
- I want distance from this account → Block.
- I want this community out of Home/Popular/notifications → Mute (within the 1,000 cap).
- I am moderating a community → Use mod tools for enforcement, not personal mute/block as a substitute.
