Turn notification types on or off in account settings, and understand how muting a community interacts with alerts.

What this guide covers
This is a practical settings how-to for controlling which Reddit alerts you receive. It is not a culture piece and not a full walkthrough of every Reddit product surface.
Verified menu paths below come from Reddit’s official iOS and Android app FAQs for Manage notifications. Desktop web notification screens can differ; where Help does not spell out a web-only click path in the sources we used, this guide does not invent one — use in-product Settings labels on web, or manage alerts in the apps.
Manage notifications on iOS and Android
iOS (official app FAQ)
- Tap your avatar to open your profile.
- Open the menu (three lines) near the top right.
- Select Settings, then your username under Account Settings.
- Tap Manage notifications and toggle types on or off.
Android (official app FAQ)
- Tap your avatar to open your profile.
- Open the menu (three lines) near the top right.
- Select Settings, then account settings for your username under General.
- Tap Manage notifications under Contact settings and toggle types on or off.
Exact category names inside Manage notifications can change; treat the FAQ path as the door into the toggles, then use the labels you see.
How muting changes alerts
Community muting (separate guide) excludes muted communities from notifications as well as Home and Popular. Help also states that if you change notification preferences for a muted community by opting into notifications, Reddit removes that community from your muted list and it can appear in recommendations and feeds again.
Practical takeaway: notification toggles and mute lists interact. If Home suddenly feels noisy after you “just fixed alerts,” check Manage muted communities.
If you also moderate
Reddit’s Community settings Help documents mod-specific notification controls (for example mod mail, reports, and activity-style alerts) that can be adjusted per community in Mod Tools → Mod Notifications, and also via Manage notifications → Moderation in general settings on mobile.
Help notes rate limits per notification type and cases where notifications are not sent (including some self-authored items and older posts). Use those in-product toggles rather than guessing.
For a plain overview of what moderators can and cannot do, see Reddit moderators explained — this page stays on notification settings.
Hypothetical setup
Hypothetical (not a firsthand claim): you keep comment replies and private messages on, turn off most marketing-style categories you do not use, mute two communities that flooded Popular, and — if you moderate — enable mod mail notifications only for the community you actively cover that week.
Checklist
- I opened Manage notifications from account settings in the app I actually use.
- I toggled categories deliberately instead of disabling all system OS notifications for Reddit (unless that is my goal).
- I checked muted communities if alerts and Home disagree with each other.
- If I moderate, I reviewed Moderation / Mod Notifications separately from personal alerts.
