Reddit moderators explained: what mods can and cannot do

SubMouse Editorial · Published Nov 6, 2026 · Last reviewed 2026-11-06

Mods are unpaid volunteers who run individual communities. Admins are Reddit employees. Here is the difference, with links to Reddit’s own Help articles.

Mods vs admins

According to Reddit Help, moderators (mods) are users who volunteer to create, guide and nurture individual communities. Admins are Reddit employees responsible for the platform as a whole. The words are not interchangeable.

Mods’ powers apply inside the communities they moderate. They do not gain special sitewide authority from the role.

What moderators can do

Reddit’s Help article summarises typical mod abilities inside a community, including:

  • Styling the community (banners, flair, wikis).
  • Removing posts and comments that break community rules or miss the theme.
  • Banning or restricting users from that community.
  • Reviewing reports and distinguishing mod comments.
  • Adding other moderators.

Communities feel different because volunteer teams choose different rules and enforcement styles.

What moderators cannot do

Official Help is explicit about limits. Moderators cannot, among other things:

  • Ban a user from all of Reddit (admins handle platform bans).
  • Edit or hard-delete another user’s post or comment sitewide — they can remove it from their community’s feed, which is not the same as erasing it from Reddit.
  • See who voted, or access private user data beyond normal public information (with limited mod-tool exceptions documented by Reddit).

If you are arguing about a removal, you are usually talking to volunteers enforcing that room’s rules plus sitewide Reddit Rules — not a global court.

Practical advice for posters

  • Read rules and recent removals before posting.
  • Use Compare two subreddits to inspect short rule titles we have collected.
  • Report rule-breaking content; mods rely on reports.
  • For platform-wide issues, use Reddit's reporting tools and the Help articles linked under Sources.
