From late 2025 into 31 March 2026, Reddit rolled out a hard limit: one person may actively moderate at most five communities with over 100,000 weekly visitors — reshaping power, succession, and “super-mod” culture.
The rule, in plain language
Reddit Help’s Moderation limits page (updated 31 March 2026) states that a person may moderate up to five high-traffic communities — defined as communities with over 100,000 weekly visitors. Communities under that threshold do not count. Alumni and Advisor roles also do not count toward the cap.
Weekly visitors are the same activity metric Reddit introduced when it replaced public subscriber counts (Visitors and Contributions explained): unique visitors over seven days via a rolling 28-day average, distinct from lifetime subscribers.
How the rollout was announced
In r/modnews (“Reshaping Boundaries”), Reddit laid out a multi-stage plan: 1 December 2025 soft-start (over-limit mods could not accept new invites to >100k communities, without forced step-downs); January–March 2026 transition with Alumni/Advisor options and exemptions work; 31 March 2026 and beyond enforcement, removing over-limit mods starting where they were least active.
Reddit said the limit would affect about 0.1% of active mods — a small share of people, but concentrated in the largest rooms that shape what millions see.
Help now says that as of 31 March 2026 Reddit is actively enforcing the limits (demodding moderators above them), with a 30-day window after notice to choose five high-traffic communities to keep or to move others into Advisor/Alumni/leave. A later r/modnews enforcement post the same day described the same options and the new Advisor/Alumni rollout on apps and web.
Built-in cushions and exemptions
Help lists important cushions: a community generally does not count toward the limit until it has been over 100k weekly visitors for 80 of the last 90 days (so one viral week should not instantly burn a slot). Listed volunteer help communities (including r/help, r/newtoreddit, r/modhelp, r/bugs, r/redditdev, r/listofsubreddits) are exempt; known mod bots and Dev Platform apps are treated specially; short-term “mod reserve” help can be exempt for seven days with extensions via Mod Support.
Those details matter when people claim “Reddit banned multi-modding.” The policy targets stacked control of many large active communities, not moderating five small hobby subs.
Why it is a culture story, not only a tooling story
For years, a few highly trusted volunteers could sit on dozens of big mod lists. That concentrated taste, removal norms, and crisis response — for better and worse. Capping high-traffic seats forces succession planning, spreads authority, and creates Alumni/Advisor as named non-controlling roles.
It does not replace what mods can and cannot do inside a single community, and it is not the same as Automod or Rules Hub how-tos in the Guides section. It is a governance density change: fewer people holding the keys to many of Reddit’s busiest rooms at once.
Communities that relied on one mega-mod for institutional memory now need documented norms, deeper benches, and honest Advisor/Alumni handoffs. Readers may notice more “recruiting mods” posts in large subs through 2026 — that is a predictable aftershock of the cap, not proof that Reddit “deleted” volunteer moderation.
Common questions
Does the limit apply to every subreddit I moderate? No. Only communities over 100k weekly visitors count, with the 80/90-day consistency rule and listed exemptions.
Is this article telling mods how to dodge enforcement? No. It summarizes Reddit’s published policy and dates so readers understand why some large communities reshuffled mod teams in 2026.
