Reddit replaced subscriber counts with Visitors and Contributions

SubMouse Editorial · Published Nov 6, 2026 · Last reviewed 2026-11-06

On 9 September 2025 Reddit stopped showing public member totals on community pages and switched to weekly Visitors and Contributions — a change that reshapes how people judge whether a subreddit is “big” or merely old.

What disappeared, and what replaced it

On 9 September 2025, Reddit’s Newsroom said community pages would replace the public Member count with two signals:

  • Visitors — how many different users visited a subreddit in the past seven days, based on a rolling 28-day average.
  • Contributions — the total number of non-removed posts and comments in the past seven days.

Reddit Help’s changelog the same day listed the swap away from total subscribers, “online now,” and rank size toward weekly visitors and weekly contributions on community and post pages in the native apps and updated reddit.com. Help later clarified (article updated 27 October 2026) that weekly visitors exclude detected bots and visitors using incognito mode on the official mobile app, and that old.reddit.com loses the old stats without gaining the new ones.

Joining a community still works the same way for your feed. What changed is the public scoreboard strangers see when they land on a subreddit.

Why subscriber totals misled people

Member counts mixed decades of joins into one vanity number. Someone who subscribed in 2014 and never returned still inflated “size.” Reddit’s own rationale: people often can post or comment without being a member, so membership never equaled engagement.

The Verge’s 10 September 2025 report summarized the same shift and noted mods can still see subscriber totals in insights for now — while Help warns member count on Mod Insights will eventually go away as Reddit leans harder on activity metrics.

For readers who use directories, that matters. A quiet million-subscriber room can look “huge” and feel empty; a newer community with strong weekly visitors and contributions can be the better place to ask a question. SubMouse’s largest communities explainer is about interpreting big-list culture; this piece is about the platform metric change underneath those lists.

Who feels the change

Casual browsers lose a familiar brag number and gain a noisier, more honest activity pair. Mods keep subscriber figures in insights for a while, and weekly visitors become the yardstick for high-traffic moderation limits (enforced from 31 March 2026 per Reddit Help’s Moderation limits page).

Directory and tool builders must stop treating “subscribers” as the only size proxy. Weekly visitors answer “is anyone here lately?” Contributions answer “is anyone posting?” Neither answers “is this community kind, on-topic, or well moderated?” — you still have to read the room.

One practical reading habit: compare Visitors (attention) with Contributions (output). High visitors and low contributions can mean a lurker-heavy or read-only room; high contributions with modest visitors can mean a chatty niche. Neither metric replaces checking rules, tone, and whether your question already has an answer.

Common questions

Why is Visitors usually much smaller than the old member count? Help says member count included everyone who ever joined, including long-inactive accounts. Visitors only count recent unique visits (7-day window via a 28-day rolling average).

Did Reddit remove joining? No. Help states you can still join communities; feed subscription behavior is separate from the public stats swap.
