Most metal music talk on Reddit happens in a few big places, but the smaller communities are where the specialists are. We checked the communities Reddit returns for “metal” and “heavy metal”, kept the public, safe-for-work ones with at least 25,000 members that are still posting, and ranked the 9 that remain by size. Together they have 3.9M members.

How the metal music communities compare

Membership is concentrated: the three largest communities hold 86% of all members on this list, so most of the metal music conversation happens in a handful of places. Size and activity don't line up perfectly: r/Metal has the most members, but r/BlackMetal gets the most new posts (about 24 a day, against 14 in r/Metal). Per member, the liveliest is r/metalmusicians: 20 posts a day from 38.9K members — a smaller crowd, but an engaged one.
