Best Japan Subreddits (November 2026)

Most japan talk on Reddit happens in a few big places, but the smaller communities are where the specialists are. We checked the communities Reddit returns for “japan” and “japan travel”, kept the public, safe-for-work ones with at least 25,000 members that are still posting, and ranked the 10 that remain by size. Together they have 7M members.

How the japan communities compare

Membership is concentrated: the three largest communities hold 85% of all members on this list, so most of the japan conversation happens in a handful of places. Size and activity don't line up perfectly: r/JapanTravel has the most members, but r/JapanTravelTips gets the most new posts (about 93 a day, against 51 in r/JapanTravel). Per member, the liveliest is r/japan_insoul: 52 posts a day from 25.8K members — a smaller crowd, but an engaged one. Among the communities we track weekly, r/japan grew fastest recently (+0.07%, +1.2K members since Oct 26). The oldest is r/japan, founded in 2008, and only one community here is younger than five years: r/japan_insoul (2021).
