Looking for the right financial independence community on Reddit? Here is the lay of the land. We checked the communities Reddit returns for “financial independence” and “fire movement”, kept the public, safe-for-work ones with at least 25,000 members that are still posting, and ranked the 9 that remain by size. How the financial independence communities compare

A few giants dominate — r/financialindependence, r/fatFIRE and r/EuropeFIRE together account for 75% of the combined membership. Size and activity don't line up perfectly: r/financialindependence has the most members, but r/fican gets the most new posts (about 18 a day, against 3 in r/financialindependence). The oldest is r/financialindependence, founded in 2011, and only one community here is younger than five years: r/FIRE_Ind (2023).

Choosing where to post

Competition for attention differs a lot: r/financialindependence has 2.5M members but only about 3.1 new posts a day — roughly one new post for every 794.7K members — while r/fican gets about 18 a day, one for every 3K. A strong, well-made post therefore has more room to be seen in r/financialindependence; r/fican is better when you want quick replies. There are regional communities too — r/FIREUK and r/FIREIndia — which are the better choice for local prices, shops, events or rules.

Big subreddits give a post the widest audience, but they also bury it quickly; the mid-sized communities on this list are usually friendlier for questions and first posts. Always read the rules in the sidebar first — each community is run by its own volunteer moderators. Our guide to searching Reddit explains how to dig through any of these communities, and the subreddit info tool gives you the stats of one we don't list.
