How the camping communities compare
Membership is concentrated: the three largest communities hold 87% of all members on this list, so most of the camping conversation happens in a handful of places. Size and activity don't line up perfectly: r/camping has the most members, but r/hiking gets the most new posts (about 44 a day, against 23 in r/camping). Per member, the liveliest is r/hikinggear: 11 posts a day from 54.8K members — a smaller crowd, but an engaged one. Among the communities we track weekly, r/hiking grew fastest recently (+0.10%, +2.7K members since Oct 26). The oldest is r/camping, founded in 2008, and every community here is more than five years old — this is a long-established corner of Reddit.

Choosing where to post
For beginner questions, r/CampingGear is the natural first stop — it exists for advice, and roughly 13 new threads a day keep it moving. Competition for attention differs a lot: r/CampingandHiking has 2.8M members but only about 7.6 new posts a day — roughly one new post for every 369.2K members — while r/hiking gets about 44 a day, one for every 62.1K. A strong, well-made post therefore has more room to be seen in r/CampingandHiking; r/hiking is better when you want quick replies. There are regional communities too — r/UKhiking and r/wildcampingintheuk — which are the better choice for local prices, shops, events or rules. Rule sets vary: of the communities we have rules for, r/camping lists 9, against 4 in r/hiking, so a post that is fine in one can be removed in another.
Big subreddits give a post the widest audience, but they also bury it quickly; the mid-sized communities on this list are usually friendlier for questions and first posts. Always read the rules in the sidebar first — each community is run by its own volunteer moderators. Our guide to searching Reddit explains how to dig through any of these communities, and the subreddit info tool gives you the stats of one we don't list.
