How the photography communities compare
Membership is concentrated: the three largest communities hold 72% of all members on this list, so most of the photography conversation happens in a handful of places. Size and activity don't line up perfectly: r/itookapicture has the most members, but r/AmateurPhotography gets the most new posts (about 151 a day, against 102 in r/itookapicture). Among the communities we track weekly, r/analog grew fastest recently (+0.05%, +1.3K members since Oct 19). The oldest is r/photography, founded in 2008, and only one community here is younger than five years: r/PhotographyIndia (2021).

Choosing where to post
If you have a question, start in r/AskPhotography: it is set up for exactly that, and with about 82 new posts a day there are plenty of people around to answer. Competition for attention differs a lot: r/photography has 5.7M members but only about 21 new posts a day — roughly one new post for every 264.9K members — while r/AmateurPhotography gets about 151 a day, one for every 856. A strong, well-made post therefore has more room to be seen in r/photography; r/AmateurPhotography is better when you want quick replies. There are regional communities too — r/photography, r/photographs and r/PhotographyIndia — which are the better choice for local prices, shops, events or rules.
A simple rule of thumb: ask questions in the specialised communities and share your best finds in the big ones, where they can reach the most people. Always read the rules in the sidebar first — each community is run by its own volunteer moderators. Our guide to searching Reddit explains how to dig through any of these communities, and the subreddit info tool gives you the stats of one we don't list.
