Reddit’s For You and Following feeds: personalized discovery comes to Home

SubMouse Editorial · Published Nov 6, 2026 · Last reviewed 2026-11-06

What Reddit announced on 28 October 2026 about For You versus Following, how that sits beside the earlier push away from r/all, and what it means for people who want control over which communities show up.

What Reddit launched in late October 2026

On 28 October 2026, Reddit’s Newsroom introduced a home experience with two explicit choices:

  • For You — posts from communities you joined plus recommendations tied to your interests.
  • Following — posts only from communities you joined.

Reddit said the experience would roll out globally over the following weeks, that people could switch anytime, and that the last-used feed would return on the next visit. The company’s framing was discovery: recommendations should lead from an interest into a community and then into a conversation.

The Verge’s same-day report described the change as a major homepage shift, noted that some accounts already saw the feeds, and reminded readers that Reddit had been deprecating r/all earlier in 2026 as part of simplifying Home personalization.

Why this matters culturally

For years, many power users treated Home as “my subscriptions” and used All/Popular when they wanted the wider site. Splitting Home into Following (subscription-pure) and For You (subscriptions + recommendations) makes the trade-off visible: control versus serendipity.

Neither feed invents new subreddits out of thin air — recommendations still point at real communities — but For You can surface rooms you never joined. That is useful for curiosity and risky for people who curated subscriptions carefully to avoid certain topics.

Reddit’s April 2026 changelog had already said modern entry points to r/all were going away, with All remaining available via Old Reddit for people on that experience. Personalized Home and a weaker All on the default site push more discovery into recommendation logic and into tools outside Reddit’s homepage.

Historically, Reddit’s product identity leaned on subscription as curation: you joined rooms, then Home mostly reflected that choice. Recommendation-heavy Homes are normal on video apps; on Reddit they collide with a culture that still argues about whether the front page should be “mine” or “the site’s.” Making Following a first-class twin of For You is Reddit’s compromise: keep the subscriptionists, court the browsers who never finished joining enough communities to fill a feed.

Who feels it — and what to do if you want intentional discovery

People who want only joined communities should learn where Following lives on their account and prefer it when the rollout reaches them.

People who like suggestions can use For You, then join or mute communities deliberately rather than letting the feed silently redefine “Home.”

Community explorers who want a map rather than a ranking algorithm can still use directory-style browsing. SubMouse’s related-subreddit finder, compare tool and Top SFW list are built for choosing communities on purpose — the same job Following protects inside the app, extended to research before you subscribe.

Interface preference (classic vs modern desktop) is a separate question; see Old Reddit vs current Reddit when that draft is live.

What we are not claiming

Reddit did not publish, in the Newsroom post, precise ranking formulas, percentages of recommended vs joined posts, or A/B results. The Verge’s first-day impressions are one reporter’s experience, not a universal ranking study. Rollout timing (“next few weeks” from 28 October 2026) means some accounts saw feeds earlier than others — absence of the toggle on your account in early November was still compatible with a staggered launch.

Also keep Popular and News in mind: Help still documents those feeds on modern Reddit. For You does not erase every other discovery surface; it reshapes Home.

Common questions

Is For You the same as TikTok’s For You page? Only loosely. Reddit’s version still centers subreddit posts and joined communities plus recommendations, per the Newsroom description — not a claim of identical ranking.

Did Reddit delete my subscriptions? No. Following is explicitly the joined-communities feed.

Where did r/all go? On the modern product, entry points were reduced in 2026; Help still pointed logged-in users to All on Old Reddit as of late October 2026.
