The history of Reddit: from a 2005 startup to a public company

SubMouse Editorial · Published Nov 6, 2026 · Last reviewed 2026-11-06

A sourced timeline of how Reddit began, who owned it along the way, and when it went public in 2024.

Why the company story still matters

Reddit is easiest to understand as a network of communities first and a company second. The product people use every day — subreddits, votes, volunteer moderators — grew up under several owners and one eventual public listing. Knowing that arc helps when you read older posts, company announcements, or debates about how the site is run.

What follows is a short company timeline with dates you can check against the sources at the end.

Key dates at a glance

June 2005Huffman and Ohanian launch Reddit after Y Combinator (commonly dated 23 June 2005 in secondary chronologies).

31 Oct 2006TechCrunch reports Conde Nast / Wired Digital acquires Reddit; price not disclosed in that report.
6 Sep 2011Reddit announces it becomes reddit Inc., owned by Advance Publications (Conde Nast parent), with more operational independence.

Founding: Y Combinator and the “front page” idea

Steve Huffman and Alexis Ohanian, University of Virginia roommates, entered Y Combinator’s early batch after an earlier food-ordering idea did not stick. Contemporary and later profiles describe Paul Graham pushing them toward a “front page of the Internet” style site. Huffman built the first version; the public launch is placed in June 2005.

Early growth stories often mention how empty the site looked at first. Treat colourful founder anecdotes as colour unless a primary source is attached — the durable facts are the launch window, the Y Combinator context, and the later ownership changes.

Infogami, Aaron Swartz, and the rewrite

In late 2005 Reddit's engineering story intersects with Aaron Swartz's work. In a December 2005 post, Swartz described rewriting the site from Lisp to Python over about a week, using his web.py library, and argued the Python version was easier to maintain. That primary write-up is the best contemporaneous evidence for the rewrite claim. The original host is unreliable over HTTPS today, so the Sources list uses an Internet Archive capture of the same page, plus a same-day Daring Fireball note of the Lisp-to-Python move.

How people label co-founder status for Swartz has been debated in later comments; for this timeline the durable point is the Infogami period and the documented rewrite.

Sale to Condé Nast (2006)

On 31 October 2006, TechCrunch reported that Conde Nast (via Wired Digital) had acquired Reddit and that the then-small team would relocate into Wired's San Francisco orbit. The acquisition price was not disclosed in that report; later coverage often cites a figure around $10 million, which should be treated as reported, not as a filing line-item from that day.

On 6 September 2011, Reddit's own blog post Independence (preserved in the Internet Archive) said the site became reddit Inc., owned by Advance Publications — Conde Nast's parent — with a board and more operational freedom than as a Conde Nast division. TechCrunch covered the same announcement the same day.

Going public: RDDT in March 2024

Reddit, Inc. announced pricing of its initial public offering on 20 March 2024: an aggregate 22 million Class A shares at $34 per share (company and selling stockholders combined), with NYSE trading under RDDT expected to begin 21 March 2024 and the offering expected to close on 25 March 2024, subject to customary conditions. NPR and other outlets covered the first day of trading.

Shareholder detail belongs in SEC filings and the prospectus rather than in a short history page; treat news analyses of stakes as reporting, not a substitute for the filing.

What this history means for communities

Corporate chapters explain who controlled the company. They do not decide whether r/AskReddit feels different from a niche hobby community. Those differences come from rules, moderators, and the posts members reward.
